I don't think this is necessarily an Islamic thing - more cultural. I can say that in Chinese culture, you don't take a newborn out for the first month. The reasons for this is logical (unless there is some emergency of course) - a newborn is fragile and susceptible to catching bugs and illnesses. They also need time to settle in a calm environment rather than be dragged outside in the cold, all the various surrounding noises...its for the childs benefit really.

I personally shudder when I see tiny babies flung over a unkempt shoulder in a busy shop - oh and especially if they aren't adequately dressed! Newborns need hats and socks!

Maybe it is just tradition or old beliefs in Islam, not religious based. I am a catholic with Polish/German background. My older relatives believe you do not take an infant outside for at least a month and definitely not until the child is baptized. They feel they are not strong enough to stay healthy and need to be safe and protected.

I had my second child, who was born in summer, out to an auction at 6 days old. One older woman was screaming at me. My first son was born in November and I did not take him outside for 3 months. It was b/c of Dr's orders as RSVP infection was rampid in our area. He specifically told us NOT to take the child anywhere for three months to protect him. We said okay! He only went to his Dr. twice for check up. Ironic, the place he went was to an office filled with sick kids.

Come to think of it, I have never seen tiny infants with Islamic woman. Just my observation, probably coincidence. It is like I never see baby pigeons either.

Huh?

There's no such thing in Islam. You sure you got the right religion? It might be a cultural issue.
