The Koreans originally learned to read from the Chinese. Writing Korean with Chinese characters was extremely awkward.
Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was developed by King Sejong's scholars in Seoul at about the time Columbus sailed. It is a phonetic alphabet far superior to the one we use. It was tailored to that language. Ours came from the Babylonians, the Romans, and just about everybody except the Mormons. The miracle is that once mastered, we can read it with ease.
Most Korean children start to read before they begin school. I learned to read Korean in two hours.
Alphabetic writing was invented only once in human history. Korean letters are grouped into syllables rather than words, but they write from left to right and they have adopted the same punctuation marks we use.
