The thing is we have all lied for one reason or another, at one time or another, without exceptions.

When a hostess ask you :"Are you having a good time tonight?" and you replied:"Yes, very much indeed. Thank you for a lovely evening". You've lied if you had a miserable time and couldn't wait to get the heck out of there.

Likewise when someone shows you her baby and you say:"What a beautiful child" when you really think the infant is super ugly; you've lied also.

I don't think it's bad if it's to avoid hurting someone else's feeling and it has to do with your own opinions/feelings and not about some material facts that you have that other do not and by lying you mislead them. Example: When a woman asks you how her baby looks and you say :"Beautiful" but as a medically trained person, you've noticed the baby has signs of juandice. Then your compliment (lie) is bad as it concealed a material fact that the mother can use to remedy a bad condition if she had she been told. You should have added to your compliment:"...However, I've noticed a skin condition that might be of concern. You should get your child to a doctor as soon as possible and have him/her checked it out"

Another situation is for self defense against potential attackers and abusers. When a stranger calls and ask a woman to let him talk to her husband. She should not tell the truth and say:" My husband is out of town" but should say:"He's tied up at the moment. Is there a message that I can give him?"

So lying is not bad if it's for sparing someone else's feelings from being hurt or to protect yourself against criminals and abusers.

Evidently it has hurt somebody. YOU..!! You will have to live with this lie the rest of your life unless you get rid of it. Now you might go tell the person you lied to or you might ask God to forgive you and promise to think twice before you do this again.
On the week of atonement you can go to anybody and ask them to forgive you any transgressions for the past year.
As you get older you will see that lying is a pain in the poopy because you MUST remember each and every lie, just in case somebody asks you about it.
Now with all this in mind.. Make a plan and stick to it.

YES. Lies breed lies by having to tell another one to cover the first one. It is an endless cycle for some. A lie is a lie is a lie. A Rose by any other name is still a Rose.
