Good luck getting a straight answer....

Hinduism is a religion created by accepting and embracing any religion it comes into contact with. Each group has their own spin on everything, so you will get some that focus on a single God and others that go with whichever is convient at the time or that switch for other reasons. Think of the Roman empire, new Gods were easy to add and many beliefs were updated as new religions were brought in.

That said, according to the most famous Indian scholar to try to answer that question, there is one God and all other gods are basically a different revelation of that God, or a lesser diety (depending on which group you ask).

correction: 'a a a'
Hinduism has the oldest recorded roots in Dravidianism. Dravidianism was estimated to have been practised around 6000 to 3000 BCE (not 1500 BCE) and as such predates Sumerian, Egyptian and Babylonian cultures.

There is no "solid proof" for God himself, depends on what you would consider solid proof.

Just one. According to Indian culture, there's just one God, who has no form and is omnipresent in every form. Although we worship around 330 milllion Demi-Gods (forms of the one).

If you want proof, study vedas. There are references of the one unknown Parmatma. All the rest are different forms like - Shiva - the destroyer, Brahma the creator, Vishnu - the preserver, etc. All of them are but different forms of the one - 'pramatma'.

It is difficult clearly to characterise Hinduism, which can take the form of pantheistic monism, as in Vedanta, or monotheism, as in Smarta Hinduism. In popular form it appears sometimes as polytheism, or as inclusive monotheism admitting emanating deities. However, the Rig Veda (undeveloped early Hinduism), was the basis for Max Müller's beliefs about henotheism. In the four Vedas, Müller believed that a striving towards One was being aimed at by the worship of different cosmic principles, such as Agni (fire), Vayu (wind), Indra (rain, thunder, the sky), etc. each of which was variously, by clearly different writers, hailed as supreme in different sections of the books.Few phrases such as Ekam Sat, Vipraha Bahudha Vadanti (Truth is One, though the sages know it as many) led to understandings that the Vedic people admitted to fundamental oneness.

In India ,or throughout this universe, the God is one and only one.
In all religions since they are born to the parents of a particular religion, they are categorised Further they follow only their custom and manners. Likewise, in Hinduism people belonging to different sects,sub-sects,regions worship their own deities. None can give you that figure of Gods in this country.. Because of the flexibility
you can design your favourite avatar[form] Ultimately, all are the
same where the noble are blessed and the evil are punished.
