The Area Agency on Aging can direct your friend to employment services and other kinds of helpful resources and assistance. Area Agencies on Aging support the dignity and independence of seniors. The staff there listen to the questions and challenges faced by seniors and their caregivers every day--they know what help is available where you live and will provide you with objective advice. Area Agencies on Aging are one of the "best kept secrets" out there for older Americans and their families.

Some Area Agencies on Aging actually provide job-counseling and connect seniors to potential employers as part of what they do. They would know about programs such as Experience Works, an employment program that is geared toward low-income seniors. They would also be able to connect you to possible help at your local workforce center

To find out the Area Agency that serves the county where you live, call toll-free 1-800-677-1116. When you call your local agency, ask for the staff that handles "Information and Assistance." I am confident that you will find the people there friendly and very helpful.

Area Agencies on Aging are funded by the The Older Americans Act. They don't have big budgets--the Older Americans Act has not had any significant increases in about 25 years! So, if you call and like the help the folks there provide, let your county officials know--and your representatives in Congress know, too.

Hope this helps! Good luck to you and your friend!

Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart. Depending on your previous job skills -- look for jobs in those fields if you are still capable in doing them. If you worked for the federal govt. then you could do contract work (Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, SAIC, NOVA Hospital System, etc.)

If you just got to this point where you finally realize you need a job at that age, you're screwed. Age discrimination will keep anyone from hiring you. You should have planned for this decades ago.
