My family owns a Dell Dimension 2400 and it has one more slot available for RAM. It currently holds 512MB but I would like to add a 1GB of Ram to make it run faster. Is there a limit as to how much I can place inside of the pc?

Your Dell Dimension 2400 has a maximum capacity of 2 GB Ram. Basic rules of ram: If you have an open slot then you can add more ram. If both slots are occupied then you cannot add more ram without replacing the existing ram. It is essential that both modules of ram (sticks) are of the same type and size.

If your target is 1GB total then you should try to go for two sticks of 512 MB each.

Directly from the Crucial website
" Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*"

More than the Hardware issues mentioned here in various replies to your question , you should also know that there are Operating Systems limits as well. Now, if you put in 10 GB of RAM into a Computer with an Operating system that does not have the capacity to use that much memory or the need for that much memory then you will be wasting your money buying all that much RAM. Both the Operating System installed on the computer and the Motherboard should be able to support the RAM that will be installed. There is a limit to the speed that can be increased by increasing the amount of RAM within a computer. If this was not the case then one could make a 486 Processor run at the speed of Pentium IV merely by adding a whole lot of RAM.

You also need to know what you will need so much RAM for. If you are a high end gamer, if you use lots of Graphics, if you are into Video / .mp3 editing etc then it will be great to have lots of RAM. But if you are a normal user with normal needs ( email, surfing the Web, downloading useful files etc., burning CDs ) from a Computer then I will suggest that you increase the amount of RAM as much as you can afford. This should not be seen as a way to increase the speed of the Computer.

There are limits, but a Dimension 2400 whould be able to handle an additional RAM of memory. But check the dell website for specs on how much, what speed, etc. go to http://support.dell.com and enter the express serivce code or model number. Look up the original configuration and it will give you the memory type and speed. Then go to the accessories and it will list additional memory that will work in your PC. Once you have the specs and part number, you can do a Google for that type/part number and find the best price to purchase the memory.

yes there is a limit, it depends on the MOBO, and the bits of the processor

your most likely a 32bit(mostly what has been released over the last 12 years) and those processors can handle about 4.2 gigs of ram if you have 512, and there is a slot left, then you should be fine, just pop one in(has to be the right type, consult your PC's MotherBoard manual)

if you are 64 bit then you are good for life(as long as the mobo supports it)

It depends on your motherboard how much ram you can put into your pc. Looks like Dells Dimension 2400 supports upto 1GB of RAM. Have a look at its configuration:

no it also depends on the processor speed . But upto 784 mb ram , any processor can run it(from 1998 processors).but a minimum of 2.4 ghz speed processor speed is required to run 1 gb ram(a pentium 4 one).in the case of dual core , it can hold upto 2 gb ram and even sometimes upto 4 gb ram.it also depends on the number of slots(each slot can be a max of 1 gb ram)

thanx for the ques

Hi there.

Yes, your motherboard will limit on how much ram it can hold. Most motherboard ranges from 512MB up to 4GB max. This is for desktop computers. Servers can go much beyond that, up to TB (terabytes or 1000's of GBs).

Here's a list of motherboards that has specs on the memory and it's max size.

For yours, your Dell Dim 2400 takes 266MHz or 333MHz DDR memory, up to 1GB worth.

Hope this helps

it is likewise obtainable that the recent RAM is undesirable, that's quite helpful to replace it for yet another stick. This in specific circumstances happens once you purchase new laptop aspects, quite online and shipped for the duration of the mail.
