Hello, in a few days time i'm going to buy a new notebook computer from www.dell.com.au and i was thinking of getting either an Inspiron 1501, Inspiron 6400 or a Inspiron 640m Notebook. I'm willing to spend as much as $1950 Australian dollars on a notebook computer which i'm going to use mainly for 3D Studio Max, Maya, gaming (Warcraft III & WoW) as well as basic software such as Word, Excel and the odd days browsing the Internet etc.

I'm not sure if i should go with the Inspiron 1501 that has an AMD Turion TL-56 (1.60GHz) processor, 2GB of Ram, 256MB of integrated graphics, 120GB HDD, Large Nylon Case and 9-cell battery (main features). Or whether i should opt with the Inspiron 6400/640M that has the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor running @ 1.60GHz, 1GB of Ram, 256MB ATI graphics, 120GB HDD, 9-cell battery, 120GB HDD and Large Nylon Case for the main features.

I don't mind Vista or XP, not that it makes a difference in the price tag. Thanks, help will be much appreciated.

The Dell 1501 will run those games for you. Upgrade the RAM to as much as you can afford (2 GB should be within your budget) and upgrade the video card. They will be the most important bottlenecks for your gaming requirements.

Dell has some good deals and coupons at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html Check them out and see if they help.

Good luck.

in my opinion, i think you should go with the inspiron 6400. I've heard better news and a better reputation about the core 2 duo than the AMD Turion. Also, I'd really prefer the 256MB ATI graphics over the plain integrated graphics (it's always better to have a nice graphic card). The only reason that you should get the 1501 over the 6400 is the 2GB RAM over the 1GB, but I'd rather buy the 6400 and upgrade the RAM later, i think it's worth it to just add a few more hundred bucks and get a better computer (i think it's better).

This is one vote for the Inspiron 1501. You will need the 2gb of ram to run the games smoothly and keep your graphics applications running with no slow down. The AMD Turion packs slightly more power, the only downside is that it heats up a little bit quicker so a "cool pad" would be a good accessory investment.

Intel Core 2 Duo is, in my experience, the better Option
Usually the Intel Core 2 with Wireless access integrated has the least problems, and any problems that occur are usually easily solved. Make sure you opt for a Good Warranty, which Dell usually gives, especially Since Asian Prices for Many Chips, Simms, and etc, are cheaper in Aus.

I suggest the dual core processor and at least 2GB of RAM. If you are going to work with 3D studio Max, I would opt for the video card with the largest amount of RAM. I suggest 512 GB if that is available. I upgraded my Dell XPS laptop to 2GB of RAM and have noted a difference. If you think you will ever want Vista, I would get it preloaded on the new machine as you will have less trouble with finding and installing drivers for your accessories.
