select your column > go to the Data menu > select sort

It's easy. Just highlight the entire column, then from Data Menu click Sort. Or on toolbar (where icons are such) click on the icon that has A above Z with a down arrow.

all these answers about sorting are right however if the list has first name then last name in the same cell it will sort by the first anme and the data will still be muddled, the only way to to do if that is the case is to copy surnames into another column.
