Depends on what kind of beard. A short well groomed beard is usually acceptable but anyone with a longer or unkempt beard is definitely giving themselves a handicap.

Yes & no - but above all I would say that a candidates energy and enthusiasm for the job, as well as properly researched and presented background to the company would swing things in your favour more than appearance. It what is most remembered after you leave the room, smart but not flambouyant, confident but not arragant, friendly but not over familiar, you hav eprobably noticed I put in next to nothing about facial hair as it really is not that big a deal. Good luck with the job interview

I think it is rather silly when employers decide not to hire people with facial hair. As long as it is neat and tidy, I don't see why it is such a bad thing. I think it is up to you. You can either keep your facial hair and find yourself the right company who are not so simplistic and superficial or you can shave off and get a job with a pretentious company. Which one do you want to work for?

No, as long as you're not a dirtball it shouldn't matter. If you find out that you were fully qualified for the job but you weren't hired because of your facial hair that's reverse discrimination so get a lawyer & sue the people living in the past. Hope you get a bundle.

Depend on the post you apply for, if you want a post at Canary Wharf in London you'd better not have a beard, but if you apply for a post as a scientist I think it's not relevant.

Unfortunately in this day and age yes it would hurt your chances at getting the job.
We as a society have become very bias on so may things. Facial hair is one of them.
It is considered to look unprofessional and un higenic.
I personaly like to see guys with a nicely trimmed Goatie...

in my profession, not exactly..i had to grow some beard to appear a little mature (i look like a high school senior without the beard). their impression without the beard is, can this person handle such large projects and responsibility?? he is still young.

i'm in the architectural field...

Yeah mate.

Beards usuall look scruffy - although I wouldn't use it as a basis not to employ someone.

i, as part of a team, hold interviews regularly and without exception we never trust or hire anyone with a beard.....especially the women!
i always think that bearded people are hiding behind their face hair and from experience they all tend to be rather odd!
