Yahoo search 'cbf free text'. You will come to Cardboard Fish free sms texting website. Add to your favourites. Make sure your firewall is not restrictive. Then follow on screen instructions. I use this all the time. Just have to put up with pop up ads, but very good.
Completely free.

yes you can,
you do have to have a mobile phone though- even if its one with zero credit, as long as you have it connected.
Go to the service providers website (service provider e.g: Orange, 3 mobile, 02...etc.etc).
On their website, there should be the option to log in, it may involve you regestering, dont worry, you are not signing up to pay anything more than what you already pay, regestration is free.
Once on the website and logged in, if the option isnt styraight forward- to send texts via your computer (for free), then email them a question or call them up to ask how to do it, (I think its appalling that many service providers make finding how to text via your pc, terrible, and dont think you should have to waste your time routing through the website to find services which they are providing to you.)
I havent had a contract with every service provider, but of the contracts I have had I can tell you that Orange, and 02 definalty do this. I have been told by friends that all the others also do this too. You get a limit of like 200 or so texts per month and away you go!

It depends on the provider of the cell phone you sending the text message to. My daughter has cingular. I send an email to 'herphonenumber@cingularme.com' and she receives it as a text message.

You can register your details at o2.co.uk without having to go with them and get 10 free txts a month and if you need more you just buy. And it really is that simple. I'm on orange and registered my details at o2 and get 10 free txts a month for doing or paying nothing so it really is free.

depends on where you are, who your mobile provider is, where you are and where the reciever is located. More info would be great.
