After a long discussion with a relative, I wanted to get another take on things. I don't believe in strict censoring of what my kids listen to. There are limits, of course. But on the whole I'm quite liberal about it. But according to said relative, the fact that I let my eight year old listen to Green Day, and let my five year old listen to My Chemical Romance makes me a bad parent, as it will ultimately turn them into little psychopaths when they are older. I, on the other hand, think that they shoulde be free to express their individual tastes in music, and enjoy what they like without fear of being pigeon-holed and stereotyped. I'd rather they were listening to 'real' music played on real instruments by bands that have a real feeling and passion for what they do, not overhyped manafactured garbage from some teenger from a reality show. What are your thoughts?

Remember the whole Marilyn Manson/Eminem thing? That was a crock of horseshite if I ever I heard one.

Music has nothing but positive effects on people, children or otherwise. It makes people feel connected to the rest of the world. It makes people realise they are not alone.

Blaming music for unruly children is a get-out clause for bad parenting. I listened to all kinds of music when I was a kid. But my parents were great parents. I grew up okay, abeit cynical, but that wasn't anything to do with music.

Music is mankind's greatest achievement. It is the only thing I can think of that mankind can be ultimately proud of. Even crappy, manufactured music touches some people on some base level.

The broader the spectrum of music children listen to, the better.

This is an age-old issue. I'm sure you've heard many times the effect that adults/parents thought rock and roll would have on kids even way back when it began.

Your relative's opinion is obviously important to you...but the bottom line is you are the parent. You decide. Personally I totally agree with you.
