You have full control to contents, design, accessibility, (advertisements if it have), and of course, you have YOUR OWN SITE. Well, that fact itself is cool!!!
If ever you got your own domain name (you rent one if you don't have), you can have a personalized email address too (or if a free webhost offers email address with their subdomain, you'll have a close-to-a-personalized email ad). That's fun.
However, even if your not asking, I want to tell that there also are disadvantages. I was recently obsessed in making websites that now I am maintaining thirty (30) of them. Time will come that you'll run out of ideas on what to put on your pages. Haha...
But having your own place in the web is fun, of course you don't have to sign up for a bunch of sites like what I did.
Try starting your site now.

Website is useful mainly for business development. self owned website is useful to store all the informations abt the person. suppose u think u r a sports person. in that case u can hav ur own website. in that u can mention how many times u played in which location, how many times u won the game. ie the History u can keep. if some one is asking ur details u can give ur website id where ur profile will be there.

Probably the main advantage is that you own it, it's as if you work for yourself.
Though often it can be a main disadvantage - it's all up to you

By having your own website.
You can show what ever the details you want to expose . for e.g like in business, you can have your products information, information about your company and personal details....
But do take care and take advice before putting all thest information... means.. you have to manage regularly(Updated version)
