After a long discussion with a relative, I wanted to get another take on things. I don't believe in strict censoring of what my kids listen to. There are limits, of course. But on the whole I'm quite liberal about it. But according to said relative, the fact that I let my eight year old listen to Green Day, and let my five year old listen to My Chemical Romance makes me a bad parent, as it will ultimately turn them into little psychopaths when they are older. I, on the other hand, think that they shoulde be free to express their individual tastes in music, and enjoy what they like without fear of being pigeon-holed and stereotyped. I'd rather they were listening to 'real' music played on real instruments by bands that have a real feeling and passion for what they do, not overhyped manafactured garbage from some teenger from a reality show. What are your thoughts?

I think that they are your kids and you can let them listen to whatever you want them to listen to.
It's like video games:just because you play them doesn't mean you are going to go on a killing spree.

There's nothing wrong with what you're doing. I have an 18 month old daughter who listens to everything from Beethoven to the music I write. I think it's very important to include classical music in a child's "music experience", just because it has been proven to increase their IQ, and it gives them a better idea of how music came to be today. My parents let me listen to whatever I wanted to as a child, but they always included classical music and early 40's and 50's songs on weekends and road trips. I think that by them doing that, I grew to respect all types of music, and I'm now able to use their technique with my own children.

music certainly appeals to infants, and has an instantaneous result. you would be able to think of that the youngsters do no longer understand the words. they won't, yet they memorize them merely the comparable. cutting-side music (positioned up 1980?) and the proliferation of hideously violent video games have the two had a deterious influence on our young infants. The lyrics reek of disrespect and violence in direction of women human beings. And ditto the video games - blood and guts everywhere. while i replaced into interior the 2d grade many years in the past, one wet recess while all the different childrens ran to the well being club, I stayed at the back of because of the fact my instructor positioned on the record participant an album named "The Grand Canyon Suite", and that i sat in my chair silent and transfixed. previous to that morning, i did no longer recognize that music could desire to be so magical, so attractive, so deeply textural. it isn't the "music" darling, it rather is the language & so-noted as "lyrics" that are doing the wear.

i think you are completely right. when i was a kid my parents tried to sensor my music listening, and all it did was make me wanna rebel more. later on they sat with me and we listened to the music together and discussed it. all they heard was loud guitars, and yelling. but when we talked about it they understood that music has different meanings for different people, and that just because it sounds loud and obnoxious doesn't mean it really is. you can never judge a book by its cover.
