Dear Friend,

All the standars English dictionaries are THE BEST.

Each dictionary is designed and edited by highly elite and intellectuals to the needs of so many categories of Students who need the Dictionary.

So,if you are interested in mere meaning ,simple meaning...go for any Concise dictionary.Or a pocket dictionary.
If you want pronunciation , the way the word is broken into syllables , the root of the word there are other versions.

If you want the usage also there is another version.

There are dictionaries that give pronunciation, syllables, usage ,root and different shades of the words etc etc.
Some give antonymns and synonyms also.

Some have more medical terms with complete meaning and usage etc.

so, these dictionaries are THE BEST ONES.

depending upon your requirement you select the dictionary.

Websters dictionary,Mary Williams,Oxford dictionaries, dictionaries published by Reader's Digest etc are the very good ones.
First clearly tell your needs...then any one can advise you.

If you are looking for a 'British English' (as opposed to American English) dictionary, I find Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary to be excellent.

If you are talking about paper editions, not online dictionaries, I would recommend Merriam-Webster for you.
The Collegiate size is excellent.
The Unabridged size is comprehensive, and monumental.

Merriam-Webster dictionaries provide definitions, pronunciation, alternate spellings, and etymology, as well as occasional usage notes.
