Do you think there should be a moral responsibility on South African citizens and those in the tourist industry to educate tourists on the dangers of visiting South Africa?
Could this backfire on S.A. if tourists are not given the facts so that they can take adequate measures ahead of visiting the country?
Remember what some South Africans may view to be a normal social environment may not be so normal to others.
Take a look at this link, it´s a camera on one street corner in Durban, South Africa.

Malan and Wanda - you guys crack me up, where are you living because it sure isn´t in South Africa?
If it wasn´t for the fact that both of you make a living from tourists and therefore have ulterior motives I may take your answers half serious.
Malan - big improvement for not throwing around racist insults, is that because only regulars and not tourists answered?

Okay, Alf posted an answer and it was removed.
Answers are being flagged as abusive by those who have an agenda in the tourist industry.
You can work out for yourselves who did it.
I think we need to keep an eye on this sort of thing.

Of course it is our responsibility. Would you want to have their blood on your hands because you let them wander around as if they were in the first world and stumble into places and situations they are not even remoteley equiped to see the danger in? If each of us can move a little information every day to our friends overseas we might actually be able to save some of them.

I think it is responsible to warn tourists. In Australia they have a government website with tourist advise for different countries. South Africa is included there and it mentions some of the crimes, ofcourse nothing in there of the personal nature some of the crimes takes on. Because so many South Africans are living overseas or have friends overseas, I am sure that the word of mouth of crime are getting out there.
I do hope that the world cup would bring more prosperity and jobs for South Africans - and that it would be a lasting thing...

Yes, crime is pretty bad in SA. Yes, it is much worse than youre average first world country (and many third world ones too). But...
As a South African I rarely feel the effects of our high crime rates. This is partly due to the fact that I take precautionary measures (don't leave stuff in view in a car, don't walk outside at night etc.).
Crime won't neccesary touch visitory, and probably won't. What pisses me off, is not the crime so much (this is expected in a country with such massive economic devides). But that so little drastic measures are taken. Mbeki said the other day that we don't have a crime problem and Selebi ( boss of the cops) said we have a slight drop in crime. Now, even if we do have a drop in crime, which I believe is a shocking lie, a drop by 1% or 2% is nothing. To bring down crime to noticable, and acceptable levels, we need a drop by 20 % and massives drastic measures by parliament. This does not seem to be happening. Therefore, if we hype this situation up (or rather state the obvious), and foreigners demand safety here, the ANC might just decide to do something. Life in the freakin' wild west... it sucks...

Yes, tourists should be warned.
As a matter of fact they are being warned right now. A while ago, a major German tour operator sent a few representatives to SA on a fact finding mission regarding safety of their clients during the World Cup. In the few days the delegation was here, they got mugged...
Now, imagine back in Germany a potential client visits their offices before the World Cup and asks about safety...

there is extra jobs. yet unemployment isn't neccessarily SA's significant reason for that is severe violent crime. many countries have lots larger unemployment with much less violent crime. that is approximately effectual policing and sentencing of criminals. Criminals have too many rights in SA. My prediction may be: If we are fortunate, crime will reasonably decrease in the direction of 2010, yet afterwards the sturdy-for-no longer something ANC government will in basic terms permit the floodgates swing open and SA would be permit to the mercy of criminals (with the ANC fat cats giggling all a thank you to the economic corporation). I basically wish i'm incorrect. might God have mercy on us...

yes they should be warned...
but the situation shouldnt be blown out of proportion, where we end up selling RSA short and forgetting the good things it has to offer. Why is it we only ever see the bad? Because the media gives us a daily expose on that...THE BAD.
Yes its no Hansel and Gretel sweet covered dream...it shouldnt be put forth as such. But we all dwell here and am sure have great experiences to share about being in RSA...
(hey its just my opinion...)
I still think they should be warned though, of a hell of a lot. thanks.

That's what I do everyday. I warn tourists so that they can stay away cause they must know by now that it's not safe here at all. I'm South African, so I have the right to warn people for I know what scums we are dealing with everday of our lives. They cannot host the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Are they out of their minds?! It's absurd! We are dealing with problems such as power failures, highest crime rate, kidnappings, (they kidnap children to use them as prostitutes for the Worlp Cup 2010). I can go on forever. The point is that it's not safe here, so I'm doing them a huge favour by telling them to stay away. It's for their own safety.

We should tell tourists where to go and where not to - same if you visit a first world city city like Washington DC with a murder rate comparable to Johannesburg (also a 1st world city). There are safe areas in SA eg. Waterfront in Cape Town (and yes, people have been mugged there like in Italy, London and New York). When I look out of the window here in Cape Town I see nothing. People are trying to portray SA as a sort of warzone. The overwhelming majority of middle class+ areas in SA has low rates of violence and is totally accessible. I have 80 family members living in all areas of the country on my great grandfather's side. At most one had a scary experience in South Africa. (I know other families have maybe different stories) Come on people, stop trying to make as if every tourist will be a victim here. Crime is a serious problem, but as for tourists who visit the country for a FEW WEEKS it's the best destination in world in terms of beauty, scenery and diversity.

Well, I love the way white people look at what they consider to be "their Country" too. If it is you country you would speak well of it. Yes we do have a high crime rate, but why are we letting that over shadow the beauty of this country. Have you ever been to the Kruger Park, to Robbin Island, Cradle of Human Kind, Apartheid Museum, Ushaka Marine, Sun City and many more other tourist destination. We live in a abeautiful country and I too have been a victim of crime, but you don't see me b!tch and scream about it!
More Tourist, more money for South Africa, more jobs, less crime. Do the Math!
