I use the Costco brand, Kirkland, and augment it with that 20 Mule Team stuff. It works. Also, Calgon is a great additive.
There's no need to spend an arm and a leg on a certain brand as they're mostly the same (except All, which is junk).

I don't buy my washing detergents anymore they don't give good results and are far to expensive to buy, so I make my own detergent which gives the whitest cleanest clothes and they come out soft not hard and scratchy like store bought laundry detergents, I first take a laundry bar soap made for washing clothes, like Zote or fels naptha grate it and add half cup of borax and allow it to dry over night before putting this mixture into a container, then when I wash my laundry I use just three tablespoons to a medium to large size load, two for a small load this is all it takes and is very economical and inexpensive and last along time, my clothes come out whiter, cleaner, fresher and don't have those heavy scents on that store bought laundry detergents leave. This recipe for laundry detergent I just gave you, I would like to add a note: This mixture will not have any suds to it, but it still cleans.

I use a trick! Only for the white stuff !!!! Halfway true the washing cycle of my machine I add 1/4 coffee cup of chlorine solution while the machine is renewing the water. The Whits are whiter than in any commercial.
For colors i use 1/2 the dose on the box of any power. This also keeps the plumbing unstuck. :-) Let the machine do the work it's built for...

I really like tide. I use clorox powdered bleach for colors. It's great for turning your clothes back to original color when washed with the wrong colors. For instance white underwear that turn pink. For my whites, I always soak in bleach first for at least an hour.

I use Gain detergent. I love the smell ~*yummy*~ and it leaves my clothes very clean.
I also use Downy fabric softer. It leaves my clothes yummy smelling and makes them so soft.
