jpg is a good format, but you can do a lot more to drop the size.

Many of the good free or shareware image editing tools such as are found on download.com will let you crop the image down to make it smaller, remove useless extra info that many images have, and even set the number of colors to a lower setting which takes up far less space.

Black and white taking the least space of all.

Also saving the picture in the scale you want can make the image display fasteronce it is downloaded but it won't make it download faster, which depends on the raw image size more than anything else.

The .png format is solid, good for photos but you need a specific program to save files as such. So does .jif but honestly, you're using one of the best formats. I suggest you use a program such as Image Ready that is specifically for changing photos so they can up used in web applications, and don't take up too much space, and allow quick downloads without sacrificing too much pic quality.

Enjoy.

There are a lot of free art packages on the market simply load up the image into you art prog and alter the resolution.
There will be an option to constrain proportion ensure this is switched on and alter one of the numbers Pixels/mm
Your image should be 1 meg or less depending on canvas size
then when you are satisfied with the result save the image back to disk

jpg is the smallest and most compressed file possible. if the image is really big, you may have to divide it into several small parts and put them together using the table html code. this way it will download a lot faster than a single big image. you can use photoshop to do it.

.jpg is actually a good format, and so is .png. Try scaling the pictures, this helps a lot. For example if your pic is 1000x1000 and you have to specify width=300 height=300, just scale the image instead.

Maybe try using thumbnails on the original page and linking to larger images - then people will not have to download the entire large image when browsing. There are lots of free software packs out there that will thumbnail-ize your pics.

jpeg is the best format usually... what you want is a program that let's you set the compression ratio when saving as a jpeg... something like photoshop elements, paint shop pro or corel photopaint will be able to help you with that...
