Cars in the UK (and most of Europe) are taxed on their CO2 emissions, not on particular descriptions (i.e. whether they are 4x4s or not). CO2 emissions are directly related to the type of fuel used, and the fuel consumption. Any large, thirsty vehicle (which includes many 4x4s, but also luxury cars, and high-performance cars) will be taxed more.
