Anyone who grew up in a nudist colony is probably too old to remember much about it, since they haven't been called colonies since the 1930's. The correct name is resort, park or camp, depending on the amenities provided.
Nudist resorts span ffrom simple RV parks & campgrounds to multi-million dollar resorts with condos & villas. Almost all have permanent residents.
There are over 300 nudist venues in the US and 5 of these are major resorts with hundreds of permanent residents in each.
Children growing up in nudist resorts live pretty much like other kids, except they can take a quick skinny-dip on their way home from the school bus.
Home nudists/naturists are estimated to make up about 25-35% of the US population, so There are probably about 40,000,000 homes where some nudity is common.

Not a colony per se but my parents (and also my stepfather who didn't come around till much later) were both nudists at home. However I like wearing clothes.
