Hong Kong was a logistical haven for the Royal Navy to influence the opium trade. It did also provide a base to look after our interests in Asia, most notably India. But Singapore, was also a vital cog in the wheels of the British Empire

It is no coincidence that Hong Kong was one of the most advance regions in Asia, as a result of this British Influence, although i'm sure the Chinese would have a different opinion

Drug trafficking is the most lucrative illegal market today, generating revenues that could probably fund deep space exploration! It was just the same then. The money involved in the opium trade could perhaps have rivalled India's exports in importance to the economics of the British Empire. Hong Kong was the lynch pin in the whole operation. Even when Asia outlawed opium, Hong Kong's opium trade (under British jurisdiction) continued to operate with impunity.
