while the above answer does say what teargas is, having been exposed to tear gas when i went through boot camp ic na give a first ahnd of what it does.
Teargas causes your mucous membrains to secrete at an advance rate. there are three main memberains it attacks.
1. your inner nose, causing snot to flow freely from your nose and down your throat if you don't lean foreward.
2. your mouth, causes loss of sensation, and drooling.
3. your eyes, specicially your tearducts begin expelling as much moisture as they can to remove the gas from the membrane of your eye.
How teargas affects a person as far as the degree of excretion, and membrains affected, depend upon the person. like a beesting, some people have great reactions, and some don't notice it at all. I hapened to be in the booth with a man, who stood and breathed normally with not even a tear, and ont he otehr side, a man who secreted so much snot down the back of his throat so quickly, that it triggered his gag reflex, and cause him to vomit within seconds of the gass being administered.
Please note, that these syptoms all cause dehydration, which can be fatal. if you have a water source on hand when you are contaminated. DO NOT DRINK FROM IT!!!!!! This will put the contaminates inside your body, and in worstcase scenarios, can cause internal bleeding and death.
Fresh air, open spaces, and removal of any clothes that may ahve come into contact witht eh gass is the quickest way to de-toxify yourself from the effects. move around as much as possible, not only to provide constan frech air to your skin so teh gass that had made ite way into your pores can get out, but also, to let your blood corulate and clence your mucus membranes from the inside through your kidneys.

Tear gas is a non-specific term for any chemical that is used to cause temporary incapacitation through irritation of eyes and/or respiratory system. Tear gas is used as a hand-held spray or in grenades. It is widely used by police forces to subdue people in arrest or riot situations.
Popular tear gases include the eye irritants CS, CN, CR, and the respiratory irritant OC pepper spray.
These gases are usually fired in canisters that emit the gases at a steady rate.
