The central locking of a W reg focus is broken and blows the fuse every time it is replaced. I have been quoted £500 by the ford garage which i think is way too much.

How much am i looking to spend and is there a better person to go to rather than the ford garage?

Eeek! I'd go to any car garage that fits radios or maybe just a general one to get a quote. It's obviously somethings wrong with the wiring. My dad's a mechanic and told me that the first thing to always go wrong in fords are the electrics. I've an escort and he dreads it when I tell him somethings wrong electric wise!

is it being replaced by exactly the same part?
it could look the same but be set for a slightly different voltage, other than that it must be wired in wrong.
£500 sounds about right unfortunately, these newer cars are not designed for the home mechanic (deliberately) so the main dealers charge even more for the correct part and a damn sight more for fitting.
is the central locking on its own circuit?
sometimes they share with another electrical item, this could be the cause of the CL blowing the fuse, it may not even be the CL.
for example, as a new driver i set off for the local town one night with no dashboard lights, i got stopped by the police because i had no rear lights on, that is when i found the dash and rear lights are linked so when the dash lights were out it warned you there were no rear lights.
worth checking the fuse box and the manual before spending so much....and if you find a local lad to do the job, dont tell him how much ford wanted to charge until AFTER he corrects the problem ;)

hi there, if you were not to far away id do it for you, the best way of locating the problem is to disconnect each door at a time wilst replacing the fuse, it might even be the central locking control unit, but your looking at no more than £100 max and thats including parts, from gary (oswestry)
