A standard QWERTY keyboard is designed according to how which letters are most commonly used in language. The letters on the top line in the middle tend to be used the most then it works down and to the sides. ERTYUI being the easiest keys to get to with the index and middle fingers and so on.

A few years ago somebody redesigned the layout of the keyboard splitting the letters in half and putting each block of letters apart. also the layout of the letters was changed slightly after a little research and it was found that not only was this new way faster to use , it also eliminated repetitive strain experienced by people who type alot. Unfortunately the new way was seen as too radical from the QWERTY setup and was never brought into main use.

The first layouts on typewriters WERE infact alphabetical. The system got changed, however, when the typewriters used to frequently jam because the hammers (that made the letters were too close together. The QWERTY layout was used so that the chances of fast typers hitting 2 keys that made 2 hammers jam was reduced. By looking at most words you will notice they are spread out pretty thoroughly over the keyboard. This keyboard layout just got transferred from manual typewriters to keyboards for the sake of consistency

Early typewriters were arranged with the letters in alphabetical order. But since they used mechanical arms to strike at the paper, as typists got faster the arms would jam with each other. So the "QWERTY" layout was developed to, depending on who you ask, slow typists down, or separate the mechanisms of commonly used letter pairs.

With typewriters today using a different mechanism than the original swinging arm and computers, the QWERTY keyboard or arguably obsolete for its original purpose. But we're already accustomed to the layout, and it's too well entrenched to see replacement anytime soon. The more efficient Dvorak layout has been around for a long time, but used by relatively few.
