I think it's kind of funny that more than half of the people here said that the pen cost 50 cents... which is wrong. This is one of those questions where you first read it and think, this is very easy... 2 dollars for the card and 50 cents for the pen, but if you read it correctly you'll see that is says the card costs $2 dollars more than the pen. When 2 dollars for the card and 50 cents for the pen would give you the card costing $1.50 more. So the answer is most definetly $2.25 for the card and .25 cents for the pen. If you read the directions carefully you will see that although the problem is simple it still requires processing.

25 cents. $2 MORE for the card meaning $2+whatever the pen costs. If the cost of the pen was 50 cents, then the card was $2+50 cents. That comes to an incorrect total of $3.00. Correct answer:

Card=$2.25
Pen=$0.25
Total+$2.50

Let x be the cost of the pen.

Then, the cost of the card will be x + 2.

Therefore, the total cost of the pen and the card can be written as:

x + (x + 2) = 2.50

2x + 2 = 2.50

2x = 0.50

x = 0.25

The pen costs $0.25, and the cost of the card is, x + 2 = $0.25 + 2 = $2.25

25 cents...

because the card would need to be the amount of the pen and the 2.00 together..

if the pen was .50 that means the card would be 2.5 and the total would be more than 2.5
