Now when the computer goes to sleep, it refuses to wake up! And no shaking of the mouse or bashing of the keyboard or swearing at the monitor helps. Any suggestions?

If you have an Acer machine then this method applies to you

Otherwise, I would first check the BIOS to see if it includes options to wake on keyboard or mouse and enable it. You shouldn't have to specify any particular hotkey, but if you do try to make it simple and remember it. Second, If the first suggestion isn't available, try to update to the latest BIOS version available and check option 1 again to see if there is a wake method for keyboard/mouse. Third, if things aren't working by now then your machine probably has some loaded drivers or software that isn't fully compatible to go into hibernation or standby, so I would just disable it.

If you don't want to disable it then you might want to start with uninstalling all unnecessary programs that you recently acquired just before you noticed your problem.

Oh, I don't know for sure, but it might be wise to disable all screen savers when you have hibernation or standby enabled.

If your mouse and keyboard are connected via USB connectors then the USB port may be set to go to sleep (ie standby) and only wake up when the computer wakes up.

If so, you need to change the power management properties of the USB port in Device Manager. You will see several USB ports listed and there is no way that I know to tell which is which so you will have to change them all or experiment until you find the right ones.

It happend to me before, I think it's usually just the computer lag, as they usually take some time to start up again. Restarting helps. (It's no biggie, don't worry)

Use a bootable virus checker disc, sounds like your PC is "looping" (getting past p.o.s.t, showing system information screen then re-setting.

Or pull the power. Sometimes it happens. I don't like standby.hibernate partially because of this problem.
