Are there any main faults to expect. When does cam belt need changing etc, etc

rover owner here, petrol though.
keep an eye on the water, had many rovers and they all tended to lose water, never knew where it would slowly go down, if the deisel engine is of similar construction then the head gasket is always a suspect, if you have recently bought the car 2nd hand then renewing the belts is always a wise move.
dont try to be a 'boy racer' in it, they dont seem to like it.
earlier models had major sensor problems but i think that is a general thing with cars now and rovers did improve on this with later engines.
treat with care they will make a good motor, usually solid underneath but the bodywork needs keeping an eye on, especially round the rear driver wheel arch (always seems to be the first bit to go)
everything else will depend on the part itself, sometimes they go forever, other times they go quick.

The other thing which you need to regulary check is the water well infront of the windscreen.

The drain hole is very small and constantly get blocked up with leaves. When raining this can fill up and get to the ECU.

The fuel pumps are another thing that seem to fail alot on all types of rovers.

Im not sure what the 75 has, but the others suffer with head gasket that tend to go quite often, that the only thing i can think of
