For me it always means a lot when parents or students take an active interest to find out what other interests I have besides teaching children. I teach 5th grade and some of the parents noticed that I had pictures of myself surfing as well as some surfing things on my desk. So that Christmas their kid gave me a mouse pad with someone surfing a big wave on it. It wasn't super expensive or fancy, but it meant a lot because I think a lot of the time parents and students only see us as educators, but most of us have lives outside of the classroom and I thought it was nice that someone took the time to acknowledge that. My advice would be to find out if the teacher has any hobbies or favorite foods, animals, sports, etc. and get something that relates to that.. It will mean a lot more just like it did for me.

I was given an electric stapler once. That was a great gift that many people got to enjoy. I bought myself a very good quality 3-hole punch...again, lots of people got to enjoy that. I always like things that were homemade...banana bread, a decorated picture frame. But the best gift I EVER got was a photocopy of a letter sent to the Principal (my boss) explaining specifically how my teaching and my interaction had positively affected the student.

I teach middle school students. I appreciate receiving gift cards. I have gotten them from car washes, coffee shops, grocery stores, department stores, restaurants and each one was a surprise and a welcome treat.
I will say that I have received a hand-made coffee mug coaster and a needlepoint picture in my teaching career that I still use and treasure. But then there are other types of items, that although the thought was nice, the item itself was rather useless or not my particular taste.

While I enjoy getting gifts, I think many teachers are like me -- they are in the profession because of its social justice dimension. So, some of the most thoughtful gifts I receive are donations in my name to local charities that help support children in my community (e.g., food banks, women's shelters, etc.).
