Meta (pronounced in sync with Vet + a) indicates very large sizes. Eg., Metadata.
Beta (pronounced in sync with seat + a) indicates the pre-final (penultimate) version of the software. This is the software which is still in final phases of the testing, but not yet ready to be released. Eg. Yahoo! Beta version.
