my first pick at the start of the regular season was the New Jersey Devils to win the Stanley Cup. the team that has surprised me the most this year was the Penguins, well i knew they where going to be better this year then last but the trade deadline pick ups of Gary Roberts and George Laraque was huge this year for the Pens and know the are considered one of the top contenders for the cup this year. Gary Roberts is a hard nose no quite player and has great leadership and with Laraque well nobody will think twice before touching Crosby or Malkin so great pick up for the Pens a true contender for this years Stanley Cup. and I'm not even a Pens fan.

and the Pens are staying in Pittsburgh.

GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The Devils are good but i think everyone is being blinded by Brodeurs' 40+ wins and 12 shutouts. Yes, he's having a great year and that's the main reason the Devils are so high up in the standings... but now picture what happens if he gets cold or gets injured. They are done if that happens. You could easily make the case that the Devils are too limited on offense to get anywhere although defense wins games in the playoffs.

I'm not saying the Devils aren't one of the top contenders in the East but I think Buffalo has a better chance as long as Miller stays healthy (too bad they traded away their insurance player... Biron). Ottawa and Pittsburgh have real shots at moving into the conference finals as well... although everyone is writing off Ottawa as they always choke when it really counts the most.

I actually will say that Ottawa will reach the Stanley Cup finals from the East just because it's a contrary pick from the norm and no one seems to be picking them. Buffalo has injury problems that I have a feeling will continue throughout the playoffs and NJ depends too much on Brodeur to make it all the way this year in my opinion.

One thing is for sure in recent years... expect the unexpected in the playoffs as teams you never gave any real thought to can reach the finals with lot's of hard work and a little luck.

It's always teams that get a hot goalie, or another team that is doing well then encounters an injury and loses out that stilts the playoffs.

Look at Edmonton and Carolina last year, Anaheim a few years back, Calgary before the lockout.....none of those teams were given a snowball's chance in hell and yet they made it.

So, my prediction as to who will represent the East is not a popular choice, and in fact, I am the only one who I think has ever said such a thing - the Atlanta Thrashers, (BTW, I live in Eastern Ontario, two hours from Ottawa).

The reasons I say this are that they are a young, fast, skilled team and Kari Lehtonen is the exact type of goalie that when he gets hot, steals playoff series' for you. That, and the Thrashers have enough older players like Scott Mellanby that add grit, experience, and smarts to the playoff run. Lastly, Bob Hartley is their coach - and you'll have to remember that he is a Stanley Cup winner so knows what it takes (though in fairness, my mother could have coached his Colorado Avalanche team and still won the Cup).

This is pure guesswork, and I am putting a lot of eggs in one basket. So many things could happen that I cannot say with certainty Atlanta will get past the first round. I just have a feeling about it, is all. Tampa Bay has shaky goaltending, Buffalo is better at playing the underdog than the favourite, and New Jersey is lacking the offence to get all the way through the playoffs, though much if that is mitigated by Brodeur. As for Pittsburgh, I think they will pose a serious threat, but somehow I don't see Marc-Andre Fleury (or Thibeault) being a stalwart goalie throughout the playoffs. Again, I could be wrong - but my gut tells me he will let in a soft one just at the wrong moment. That, and with the exception of Recchi, Roberts, and Gonchar (let's be serious - Laracque will probably be in the press box for the playoffs), they have very little in terms of experienced leadership on the team and when they face adversity - again, this is a guess - the younger guys will be prone to strategic errors, or will attempt to play with grit and instead take bad penalties resulting in the opponents' getting the game-winning goals.

Once again, I repeat - this is all guesswork, and I will be happy if proven wrong by any of TB, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, or anyone else - but heaven help me if Ottawa advances. I cannot stand them.

So I stick with the Atlanta Thrashers, but if I am wrong - I'm wrong.

of path Buffalo has a shot at winning a Cup. there is an significant volume of success in touch each time a collection wins, and you in no way be attentive to which way the proverbial ball is going to bounce. i'm no longer likely to declare that Buffalo is a universal, yet they do have a collection that has the flexibility to get to the Cup very final. this actual 3 hundred and sixty 5 days has an amazing field, and the suitable 4 communities from each convention all latest a great case for a Stanley Cup run. as quickly as you throw Detroit in the mixture, this is going to be interesting. nonetheless, i would not exclude Buffalo in any respect.

Its' going to be either the Devils, Sabres, or Pens reaching to cup final this year for the east. The Devils if Brodeur plays great, the Sabres if they stay healthy, or the Pens if the kids can make it in the playoffs.

Don't get me wrong, I hate both the Sabres and the Penguins, but the Sabres are the best team in the East. Therefore, they'll more than likely make it to the Stanley Cup finals. Watch the way the Sabres move the puck. Their defense is tight, their forwards are fast, and Ryan Miller has played well in goal all year. I don't see any other threat in the East other than the Devils.

The Penguins got no shot, sorry to break it to you. I'm not from Buffalo, I'm from Niagara Falls, NY, and I'm a Sabres fan. Pens got who? Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Sidney Crosby, Sergei Gonchar, Mark Recchi and sometimes Marc-Andre Fleury. The Sabres, we can go and look at Maxim Afinogenov, Chris Drury, Daniel Briere, Jason Pominville, Thomas Vanek, Jaroslav Spacek, Ryan Miller, Dainius Zubrus, Brian Campbell, Henrik Tallinder, and others. Pens got a few good players, Sabres got.. too many to name. So, I truly believe the Sabres WILL win the Stanley Cup, not just make it.

I do not live in Buffalo , but they are fast and skilled and have some grit and a good D, plus Their Goalie is good. They would be my pick. If Brodeur stays as hot and the Devils get healthy they could make a run. TC messtograves

Buffalo is not built for a long playoff run. If Ottawa makes it past the first round, look out. Of course, the Devils are always a threat, because they can ride Brodeur. Tampa Bay probably has the best goalie not named Brodeur, so I give them a good chance.

I think the Sabres will go to the finals ,the only team I see knocking them out is NJ if Marty gets hot. And Im not a Sabres fan either
