What is a Gerbil?
Gerbil (jûr'bÄl) , small desert rodent found throughout the hot arid regions of Africa and Asia. Also known as sand rats, gerbils have large eyes and powerful, elongated hind limbs upon which they can spring. Gerbils are 3 to 5 in. (7.6–12.7 cm) long, excluding the long tufted tail, and are sandy, gray, brown, or reddish in color with white underparts. Most species are nocturnal, and all live in burrows. Their diet consists of seeds and grains; they also eat desert plants, from which they obtain almost all the water they need. With the exception of a few species, gerbils tend to hoard food. In recent years gerbils have become popular as house pets. They are odorless, easy to raise, and usually gentle. Females may bear as many as 15 litters in a lifetime; each litter may contain up to 10 young. Gerbils are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Rodentia, family Cricetidae.

Trivia
• When a gerbil is suddenly surprised, startled or excited, it may begin thumping his back feet rhythmically ; this habit is to warn others of impending danger, even if there aren't others around. It is also widely used when two gerbils mate.

• Pet gerbils are illegal in the US states of California and Hawaii. [citation needed]

• They love sunflower seeds. If their diet is not monitored they can become overweight because the seeds have a high fat content.

• Gerbils will usually have 4 toes on each of its front feet and 5 toes on each of its back feet. The reason it has more toes on the back feet is to allow the gerbil better balance when it is standing on its hind legs.

• The oldest recorded gerbil, Sahara lived to eight years and four months, belonging to Aaron Milstone from Michigan, USA. Sahara died in October 1981.

• The largest recorded number of gerbil pups in a pet litter was fourteen in Bulwell, Notts, in May 1983.

• When a gerbil is overheated it may lie on its back revealing a white belly. In the wild they will do this because the exposure of only a white part of their bodies will reflect the sunlight and keep them cool.

it is like a cross between a hamster and a mouse. they are very cute but have short life spans. I believe around 3 years. we had one named Martin and he died right around age 3. I will never get another as they die to soon. also cats like to try and get into the cage hhmm never knew them to be aggressive and if you use good bedding cages don't have to be cleaned every day
