Considering the amount of music that is used throughout the film.

Somebody once said that a musical is a film where people spontaneously break out into song. A "movie with music" uses specially designed songs to enhance the mood and tone of the film. I think "Elizabethtown" is an example of the latter.

i wouldn't say so. lots of other movies and television shows use heaps of music just as Elizabethtown does. O.C. and Grey's Anatomy are very prominent examples of this. but they're not considered musicals, just dramas with a very extended soundtrack.
