The people who accredit universities are your best bet.

There are over 1000 accredited Universities in total, they won't all fit here. Maybe if you limit it to a specific major or region... Or do you want us to rank their football teams?

There are lists for accredited law schools, accredited online universities, med schools, film schools... there are also books about each.

Arizona (a relatively average state) has:

Three reputable Universities:
University of Arizona
Arizona State University
Northern Arizona University

Some others that are classed as Universities:
Pima Community College
Mesa Community College
Yavapi College
The University of Phoenix
and a lot that I have never heard of, like Scotsdale Culinary Institute.

California has many that I've never heard of

Hi, you might wanna try this website =) They are able to give you the ranks of not just the top national universities in America but also the best liberal arts, Masters and even Engineering programs.

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/rankindex_brief.php

However, I'd assume that you are speaking about the National Universities in USA - these are your top ten, which I extracted from the website:

1. Princeton University(NJ)

2. Harvard University(MA)

3. Yale University(CT)

4. California Institute of Technology

4. Stanford University(CA)

4. Massachusetts Inst. of Technology

7. University of Pennsylvania

8. Duke University(NC)

9. Dartmouth College(NH)

9. Columbia University(NY)

9. University of Chicago

Most importantly, each ranking list have their own set of criterias while ranking these universities. You might want to check out this criterias as well, and decide what rankings are you specifically looking for i.e. teaching, financial aid etc.

Hope this hlps! =)
