The problem with most people who procrastinate is that they want everything to be perfect - you want to have to write a whole page when you start and you get discouraged by writibg a paragraph at a time. Just remember this quote "No one made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do little."

The best way, though it depends, may be to make an outline of what your going to do, and then when your done say the first and second paragraph take a break get something to eat and relax a little, it helps a lot when you go back to working because you'll have a clear head. Then try doing the same thing again. Oh and try to get rid of any distractions so you can concentrate properly, and motivation and once you start working then you'll keep on working once you get the momentum.
Though different people work in different ways, so it's hard to tell someone what they should do exactly.

Start at once!
LOL. But genuinely too. It's the hate that gets in your way. Imagine what it would be like if you truly believed that writing essays was fun, was a natural expression of your creativity, that you really enjoyed putting your thoughts into words and sharing your knowledge with others. What's it like for you when you are with a friend or someone in your family and you really really want to tell them a story? Remember? Imagine! Bring that energy into this essay. However far-fetched this seems right now, get a fantasy of it in your head. Then act as you imagine you would if it were true. Write your words for the sheer joy of writing. F*** the grammar and spelling for now if these are stumbling blocks, you can take care of those later. Just find enough discipline to keep on topic, to write within the tramlines of bwhat you've been asked to write about and not about the color of the moon.

all it takes is one strong decision. your words make me assume that you are waiting for the opportune moment to quit procrastinating and START doing the work at hand. it's just an assumption of mine.
the secret of getting along with work is there is no secret. if you WANT to do it you WILL do it. most often, if the distracting element is pleasurable then the mind will obviously hit that string many times. try and figure out what that pleasure is, and this will help you zero in on how to help yourself. all we need is a PURPOSE and that will lead to a DECISION to take up the job. purpose GUIDES us in any course of action. try to find that purpose in doing that task and automatically you will be amazed to find that there is a flow without any stoppages. not that you have to agree to what i say...this thought pattern helps me a lot. it may help you too.

1)A good blog
http://www.procrastinationsolution.com/
but you'd probably be putting off your essay by reading it.
2)Tell you what - promise yourself a reward . A grand one & tell yourself that you're going to have it only when you are through with the essay . Sit down , take a minute off and visualise yourself typing the essay . The brilliant points in your head . Visualise your work done .
You should be alright ...
and 3 : post the topic up here ..
We're here to help! ;)

Wow um... hopefully this answer isn't too late.
That happened to me once, but once you think about it, you just need to ask yourself,
"Self, do I need this grade badly, very badly, or absolutely positively must get a good grade on this?"
If you think this assignment is very important, you will get it done before it's due.
Otherwise, you should sleep, then wake up one hour before school starts, and that should force you to finish the essay in a jiffy. (I did this a few times, unintentionally, but it sure as hell worked.)

find some motivation that will make you sit in your chair and finish your work.
for me, my nagging mom has always worked.
get a friend who also has to do the same assignment, so you guys can work on it together.
otherwise just get started,
once you gain momentum, it'll be easier to stop procrastinating.
