What would be the problem with suspending ALL immigration for a few years until the USA can fix some issues?

There's no need to. We already have an immigration system in place, all we need to do is enforce it. We have complete control over who comes in, why and for how long.

The only part we're not enforcing well are the people who bypass the system.

Different sectors of the economy would be affected differently.
Although most Americans hate to admit it, the illegals that come through aren't really "stealing" jobs. Fact is, most employers know the reprecussions of hiring illegals if they got caught, and they would actually like to hire citizens instead. Most jobs taken by these illegals are seasonal work, or grunt work that pays next to nothing.. jobs that average Americans don't want to fill. You're never going to hear of an illegal immigrant taking a knoweldge worker job are you?

I think what you propose isn't a bad idea actually. Give some time for the government to figure out just how badly it would affect things, and give businesses time to cope with the loss.

I don't know if I would propose suspending it though (it would be kind of hypocritical knowing the vast majority of Americans are decended from immigrants), but more selective yes! I feel the US must be more selective with its immigration, and have tougher laws restricting it.

No suspension. People are being killed every day who can not immigrate. Great idea if you are already in the relative comfort of the USA and out of harm's way.

that would unnecessarily disrupt the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, Like my family, punishing those who went through the legal process. I say turn one mile of the southern border into a military reserve for artillery practice. This would be a better answer, than suspending the rights of legal citizens.

I'd support banning all immigration. Best way to keep al qaeda out. I'm just curious, though, why you want to ban immigration? Hopefully, this isn't about mexicans. terrorists are flying in with their visas and passports, not crossing the border in mexico, and many came in under clinton, so let's not start the partisan pissing contest....

It would be a terrible move. The United States would suffer unprecedented brain drain, the political repercussions from our allies would be dire, and what good will we have left in the world would be utterly crushed. We'd wind up with an army trying to guard our southern border, while millions upon millions would emigrate to other nations.

It would be silly. Businesses need foreign workers for many purposes; many such workers have skills that are in short supply among citizens. Immigrants create wealth for themselves, the people they work for, and the people they buy from.
