I will be in Berlin on business but will have some free time and want to use it well. What are the must-see sights in and around Berlin?

Take a tour with this company:

The tours are free, you pay the guide as much as you think it was worth. So if it is bad, you won't have wasted any money. Also they have some great themed tours - Red Berlin, the Third Reich, Cold War History,....

You also absolutely must go to Potsdam for the park landscape and Sanssouci castle.

Whether you like history, culture, nightlife, or all of the above, Berlin is a great place to visit. The extensive transportation network makes it easy to get around this sprawling metropolis. In addition to popular destinations such as the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, the remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall and the Wall Victims Memorial, take in the city's contemporary skyscrapers, large zoo and many art and history museums. End the day, and perhaps start the next, in a nightclub or two.

I agree with the answer above: Definately go to the Fernsehturm (T.V. tower). Go during the day. You will have a much better view than at night.
Other sights: Brandeburg Gate, Friedrichstrasse, Checkpoint Charlie and Potsdamer Platz. They are all pretty near each other, so that should be a good start for a day or two.

If you like culture and history don't do this ...but if you want to have a blast take the subway to the main TV tower building , Fernsehenturm (I think it's a Frederic's Platz or Karl Marx Platz (near the Ostbahnhof) and go to the top ...they have a revolving restaurant with the best 360 degree views of Berlin....plus you can get wasted on good german bier while you enjoy the sights...See you don't get this kind of info from Fudors Guide Book or Rick Steves.....LOL
