I live in Southern New Zealand and last night, not for the first time I might add, I woke up from a strange, hissing or snoring noise coming out of the open fireplace. It was quite regular, but sounded angry.
Does anyone know what animal makes that noise? Could it be a possum? Or some kind of bird, maybe?

it sounds like a santavamp, to me. its ancestors migrated from the north pole and inhabited in transylvania for an era, cross breeding with blood sucking bats created this new breed. due to its nocturnal nature and bloodthirsty hunger, they are on constant prowl of sleeping humans for quick and easy fix. the only way they can enter a home is through a chimney and after they finish a meal, they leave behind a gift.

since there are over 40 million possums and only 4 million people in NZ the likely hood of it being a possum is you best bet.if not it could also be a rat.

Im guessing it's a oposum. But its kinda unlikely that it would be there for a long time without showing some sort of obvious sign.

I'd guess a possum. They're always getting themselves into strange places. I've had them use my tent as a trampoline.

Your evil twin slipped his shackles and escaped from the basement again.

Or more likely it could be a possum. Just check for a strong urine smell, that should confirm it.

It might very well be an opossum..they do make the sounds you described...call animal control - do not attempt to remove it yourself.

Could this be possibly the Tuatara lizard. I know they are considered rare, but lizards do hiss when they feel threatened

It could be the dreaded alien Tazmanian devils invading New Zealand. Arm yourselves or you are doomed!
