You can use the command
In Start -> Run type
"net send 'IP Address of recipient' 'your message'"

Or you can install VYPress, lan chating software to chat with users in your LAN.

Here's another software you can download and install to chat within your LAN. It is open source. I assume you are using a Windows operating system. http://sourceforge.net/projects/lanmessenger
