Brooklyn, NY to be exact, living in a house with enough property to build a pond outdoors, what are the pros and cons for raising Koi here, especially since we can have harsh winters? Some of the good reasons I can think of is that I wont have the problems of Racoons, foxes, Herons and other predators that prey on Fish...but what is the downside of Raising koi in the city?

Well it doesn't matter as to where you live since even the warmest or coldest climates can have heaters or chillers on their ponds.

It doesn't matter if the ponds freeze since the fish go into hybernation and can remain in the pond.

Predators are also not a major concern since they also sell predator covers and bird nets for ponds.

The largest thing I can think of is Space. You may be limited to a smaller pond with smaller fish on your deck rather than a large pond in the yard (unless you have a yard).

If your place is small you may be limited to an inside tank vs. an actual pond.

For every pro there is a con.

The only down side I can really see is being limited on size.

You can have a nice little pond with smaller fish on your deck. If keeping them over the winter is a problem, most fish stores will take them back at the end of the season. You can just restock in the spring. Some stores will actually keep your fish for you depending on the store. I know a few people who live in Manhatten and not only have small ponds or free standing fountains on their terrace but dogs that never leave the appartments. All seem happy and healthy.

You are only limited by your imagination.

If you have a backyard and can build a pond...nothing! The city may be more polluted...and that could transfer to the pond but i seriously doubt it would impact it seriously enough to kill the fish. I live in Detroit and have a pond...it's one of the most polluted areas in the country and have had no problems.

The only issue could be cold winters....I have a very large tank that i put all my Koi in during the winters....just to be safe. But I know over a dozen people that leave their fish in the ponds even in the cold Michigan winters....and they are quite healthy and happy fish. They are naturally from areas that have cold winters. The only thing it requires is a small floating heater. They can be found at any aquarium website.....they keep a small area heated to prevent ice from forming over the entire pond and suffocating the fish.

The awnser above gives you some good info... also for the predator problem there are fine mesh nets you can buy to keep them out of while still being able to enjoy your pond.

specialists: you get rather super eggs, their poop could be composted and makes super fertilizer, additionally they'll consume a super kind of bugs and weeds, they're very impressive and in case you have a small flock (below 50) they alter into puppy like as each and every has a character and maximum are very froendly in the direction of human beings nad like being held, petted and talked to. Cons: They poop lots and that poop gets everywhere so which you will would desire to stop going around outdoors barefoot they are in a position to be very unfavorable to gardens. they'll consume maximum vegetables and end result and that they prefer to airborne dirt and dust tub in flower beds, to that end destroying that paintings. fence them in nicely stressful to bypass on holiday as chicken sitters are stressful to come returned by using in case you get a chicken than you have gotten noise (no want for a chicken to get eggs, except you like fertilized eggs for hatching) Predators like to kill and consume them, predators at the same time with canines, coyotes, hawks, owls, weasels, oppossum, skunks, rats, cats, fox, human beings, etc.. build a solid coop or have losses (like the entire flock in a single day) they'd desire to be fed 2x an afternoon on a daily basis summer season and winter rain or shine, warm or chilly. basic i come across the specialists out weight the cons because of the fact the eggs would be some million,000,000 circumstances greater useful than what you're paying for from the keep. and that they are for ever and ever impressive and relaxing.

In the winter we had to bucket ours and bring them inside cause a heater would've melted the plastic and the pond would freeze
