Sorry, this is a silly question and I'm such a girl about cars. What is the difference between the "d" "2" and "1" in my car? My car is an automatic so how do I know when to use which?

they are just lower gears. you use them for climming steep grades, driving in snow, or pulling heavy loads. Chances are you'll never use them

use the "d," for drive....the 1 and 2 are for first and second gears---the lower gears which you are not meant to drive fast on. you shouldn't use the first gear past 10 or 15 mph (when your car begins to rev up loudly), and the second gear should be used in between 10-15 and 25-30 mph. Basically, since you drive an automatic you never really NEED to go into 1st or 2nd. The only time you might want to use them is when you are going down a long steep hill and you don't want to keep your foot on the brakes (which would wear out your brakes quickly!)...

If you live in a snowy climate, you would put the gear selector in "2" to keep the tires from spinning quite as easy in the slick stuff. Other than that, what everybody has already said is true. Usually for steep grades or towing, but then only if it is needed (like on a steep downgrade when it has a sign that says "trucks and vehicles pulling trailers use lower gears") or if your car is shifting up and down continuously while climbing a hill.

D1 is the same as drive - used around town. D2 is basically an overdrive gear - used for the open road, expressways, and higher speed driving. I'd just leave it in D2 unless I was towing a heavy load, or driving up and down a series of steep hills. Basically, if the car needs to shift down to climb a hill while maintaining the same speed, and there's more similar hills coming - use D1. Otherwise, stick to D2 and let the transmission decide when to use it. This will also save you gas!

D = Drive (or 3rd gear)
2 = second gear.
1 = 1st gear.
Just put it in D and leave it there, unless you want it to stay in a lower gear like when going up, or down, a very steep hill or when towing something.

"D" is for drive, which is regular driving. "1" and "2" are lower gears for steep grades, or towing. You won't use them very often.
