Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase(G6PD) deficiency is This is one of the most common human enzyme deficiency; an estimated 400 million people worldwide have it. So it can be serious if not treated, even fatal. But hopefully your baby's was identified very early, if so that's great.

I've had a few babies with this, usually they get very jaundiced (yellow) very quickly. When neonatal jaundice persists, especially if parents have a certain ethnic background, G6PD deficiency is suspected.

Bizarrely, one benefit of having G6PD deficiency is that can make the individual immune to malaria. Another strange factoid: those with G6PD deficiency also may be allergic allergic to fava beans.
