The wisdom to appreciate and enjoy what they have; the imagination to have something to aim for, without life depending on it; the good sense to know you cannot lose what you never had. So it's all in the mind, really. So it's wisdom - only got from experience and reflection perhaps.

Start with the idea that we are creatures based in biology. Happiness happens when the brain receives extra doses of serotonin and dopamine. So, what can cause the release of these chemicals?

Most of the time, there are events that trigger it. Other times, our bodies might just release an "extra dose" and we feel happy for reasons we aren't quite sure of.

We are highly social beings. So, when we receive approval from others...serotonin release! When we do something that we think will gain us approval, we are happy. Along the lines of social happiness is physical happiness. When we feel the touch of another person it is like social approval in overdrive.

Interestingly enough, when we discover something unexpected - learn something new, find something that was missing, hear a joke that had an unexpected twist - it makes us happy. It seems like when our brains don't receive the expected input, it has to form a new connection - and this seems to cause a release of serotonin (just guessing there).

When we get what we think we want, we are happy for a time. But, this fades when we realize that it is never really enough.

For some, the idea of a god who loves them and will be there for them after death to offer them the highest approval is enough to sustain contentedness, if not outright happiness.

I think that, in the end, the strongest element of happiness seems to be social success.

God (or nature, whatever you call it) made lot of beings, a few of them humans. Humans become happy for a variety of reasons. There is no single reason/ factor which is universally applicable. Same factor may not remain applicable to a person over time. These factors change with person, place and time. Many wise people have researched this in past but have not come to an equivocal answer. A few usual factors which one recollects are:-
1. Having basic needs met.
2. Having social needs met.
3. Having emotional needs met.
4. Having good health. This could change over a persons life e.g. in old age one would be satisfied with just being able to go to toilet on your own.
5. Having no regrets, especially in old age.

The list can go on and on.

Wish you good luck in your quest. May God grant you success where others have failed. Maybe this success will bring happiness to you.

It is very difficult question to answer.Happiness is the status of mind.In any situation if you could feel relaxed with no tension in your mind , it is generally called happiness in broader sense. The problem is which will bring that situation to a person.Since each one have different taste, needs controlled by very large number of factors like his/her age, community where they live, family situation, country and what not.
So irrespective of anyones situation if one could be able to relax with the situation offerred by GOD, it is called happiness. For a poor a 1000 dollar, for an addict ,a bottle of wine, for an empty stomach ,a good meal like that.At the same time , the irony is that a person who have all the items in plenty in his house may not necessorily be a Happyman.
In Hindu Religion, it is preached that one should be able to be Happy with what GOD has provided with him.But an another school of thought who criticzes these type of preachings saying that it will prevent one from achieving his high point with his hard work etc....
So I am comingback to the start. It is a very hard question to answer.
Ahahahahahaa.....

Happiness in the Heart.

Means and ways could be different for different people, different occassions, different regions, but Happiness comes only when ones' heart feels Happy.

Having their own needs met. Having someone or something make them feel good, in some way. Basically, when the human condition feels sated.

For example, I used to work in a doctors office. I noticed that when people ( especially older patients ) would be called to go back for their appointment, that they had sour looks on their faces and were quite cranky.

However, when they emerged from the examining room.....precriptions in hand, samples of meds in their purses, etc......the were ALL smiles! And, when I checked them out.....they were as sweet as honey!

It was amazing to watch!

What they want is given make one happy. People always expect the needs to be fulfilled. The need is full meals, clothing and entertainment which they get from money alone. So, encourage them how to earn money. The answer is only educatioin, industry and timely approach to achieve anything.

No two people have similar view about anything. Some may feel content with peace of mind or love and family, while others are more worldly who do not settle for anything less than truck-load of money or monstrous influence.

It depends on the definition of happiness for the individual. If one can achieve mentally stress free state of mind for a considerable period, that can be called happiness.
