I work as a lender for home improvement loans in the United States and handle Canadian accounts as well. There has been a huge surge in requests to redo basements in Canada. Why is this?

I think perhaps were the market has gone up recently and it is harder to buy new homes or larger. People are adding living space by renovating their basements.
Plus there have been quite a few weather issues up here that have caused some much needed fixing up.

I am also guessing there are more basements in Canada. Basements are a standard feature in most new homes in Canada. I have noticed that when I cross the border (to the Seattle area) many new homes, including luxury ones, surprisingly do not have basements. This has struck me as odd as it results in the houses being considerably smaller than their Canadian counterparts.

Hello from Canada!!

Finished basements do seem to be a Canadian phenomena. If you think of it though, it is a logical, economical way to increase living space.....as opposed to building additions or moving to a larger home. I would imagine, in Canada anyway, the value added to the property would far exceed the expense of the upgrade.
Make sense??????

Don't be fooled... there is a huge gambling problem in Canada. Those sneaky poker faced Canadians are borrowing the money "to do up the basement" because that's the one place that you can't inspect without going inside... and they know you won't be around to check!

Smarter than the average bear... they are trying to steal your picnic basket.

"SIMPLE ECONOMICS"
More houses have basements in Canada than in U.S. It's cheaper to remodel or adapt an existing structure to living space than to create a whole new addition.

didn't you hear, weed is legal there now, they got to have the smoke room and be able to hide so their friends wont know if they are home when they are out of weed themselves.
