Since you brought up Wikipedia I found this passage quite confusing

In a series written by J. M. DeMatteis, Hal Jordan was able to bend the Spectre's mission from one of vengeance into one of redemption. After this series was cancelled, Jordan was forced to return, temporarily, to the Spectre's mission of vengeance. After the Spectre was able to purge the Parallax from Jordan, he departed in order to move onto the next recipient of the Spirit.

How did Raymer become Ion?

You want to know a lot for spending five points, don’t you? Well, let’s see. Hal Jordan was the Silver Age Green Lantern. For more information on the Green lantern Corp, go to glcorps.org. Some of the material is a little dated there, but it is the most comprehensive site I know for finding out about ALL the Green Lanterns. I don’t think they cover Parallax, or Ion. There are links to fans sites that you may also find helpful.

Many people (myself among them) were sorely disappointed to find Hal Jordan turned into a villain. It was a poor way to treat a character who had been a good guy up until then.

About the Spectre, you can find a basic description of him in Toonopedia (much better for our purposes, then wiki.) GL is also there.

Spectre was created by Siegel and Shuster, the same guys who made Superman. Only Spectre is so much more powerful. I believe he is the most powerful character in all of comics.

Spectre started out as Jim Corrigan (notice the initials!) a police detective who was put in a barrel of cement and dumped in the bay by criminals to drown. He died and was brought to God for judgement. God sent him back to Earth as an agent of supernatural retribution against evil, kind of like an avenging angel. (Think of the angel of death who struck down the Egyptian firstborn at the Exodus, and you’ll have the idea.)

Spectre was more than cosmically powerful. He would regularly fight ghosts and demons in addition to ordinary bank robbers. He could grow until he was larger than the galaxy and would sometimes fight his supernatural enemies by hurling entire suns and planets at them. At least once I remember his smacking someone by grabbing a comet by the tail and whirling it around his head like a morningstar before he delivere the crushing blow!

He could turn invisible, go through walls and all the usual ghostly things. He could also
transmute bullets into smoke, animate objects, throw mystical blasts, etc. He could stop time, see the past, handle antimatter without being harmed, etc. How many other homicide detectives do you know who can question murder victims about the manner of their demise?

If he ever got stuck on a case, Spectre would ask God for advice, and he always got the exact help he needed. (Disembodied word balloons were tastefully employed.)

In the 70’s, they changed the Spectre and made him more vicious. They had him killing bad guys instead of turning them over to the police. There was a mafia type boss who ordered some killings, His trademark was the little rubber duck he carried with him for luck. Spectre surprised him in his bath and gestured at the duck, which grew to enormous size and ate the guy, before shrinking back down to normal.

Another time, a hairstylist was secretly a hit man. When the Ppectee caught up to him, he made a magical gesture at the scissors, which grew large and snipped the guy in half.

Another time some holdup men who had shot a cop were hiding in a hobby shop with hostages. Spectre caused a painted lead miniature figure of a Viking warrior to grow to life size and split the skull of one of the criminals with his axe. Then Spectre shrunk them both down to miniature size again. The tiny dead criminal, with the axe still in his skull, was found by a reporter who was investigating the supernatural deaths of many criminals.

The reporter tracked another criminal to a sawmill. The criminal tried to take him as a hostage, but then the Spectre arrived, he turned the criminal into a log and ran him through the sawmill, while the reporter was still protesting that his family wouldn’t even get anything to bury that way.

All the while, Jim Corrigan was still operating as a police detective. (Nobody knew that he had really died, the first time.)

There was a creepy old guy who made realistic looking store window mannequins, which he magically animated and sent out to rob for him. They killed people who tired to resist, so the Spectre got wind of it. When the geezer found out that Corrigan was investigating, he kidnapped Corrigan’s neighbor from his apartment building (the romantic interest, a good looking redhead) and sent a mannequin in her image to do Corrigan in. Serious mistake! You can’t kill someone who isn’t alive!

Spectre rescued the girl and turned the geezer into a mannequin, one that couldn’t move. At the end, there was a scene where all the mannequins were being burned in an incinerator--- including him! The look on his face!

Anyhow, those were classic stories. Hal was not a bad choice to be the new Spectre. I just wish he hadn’t gone bad in the first place.

There's a lot of info you're looking for....

First we'll start with his Personal Life and Family. Hal Was a test pilot. As was his father before him, who died in a crash when Hal was a kid.

Why he became Parallax is tied in to the Death of Superman.
When Superman died, four Superman came on to the scene, the Cyborg Superman (who resembled a terminator version of the Man of Steel) proved to be evil and destroyed a whole city...Coast City; Hal's hometown. Stricken with grief, Hal decided to use his ring's powers to make a green ghostly version of the city. Because of this abuse of power; the rest of the Green Lanterns were sent to stop him...but they couldn't. Hal went on a rampage across the universe, until he got to OA. The center of the universe, home of the Guardians, and source of all power for the Green Lanterns. He absorbed all the power for himself, and became Parallax and destroyed all the guardians but one, who smuggled a new ring to Kyle Rayner.

Parallax was not defeated, he gave up his life willingly. During the "Final Night" story, a parasite called the sun eater was doing just that...eating the sun. He was the only one powerful enough to stop it, so he used his powers to not only stop the sun eater, but recharge the sun it's self he was killed in the process and for his actions, many of the heroes forgave him, Batman did not. There was a tremendous amount of energy left over, and Kyle Rayner absorbed it. Becoming Ion... it was too much power for him, and he decided to get drain himself of it by recreating a new OA, and Green Lantern Corp.

Jim Corrigan, DC's original Spectre had earned a place in Heaven. Without a human to bond to, The Spectre was taken over by a demon. After the demon was defeated, the ghost of Hal Jordan was chosen to bond with the Spectre.. as for the redemption aspect.. I'm not too sure about it but I know he was out to make up for his own past.

The Spectre is intangible, can fly, turn invisible, inhabit and animate inanimate objects, and sense the intentions of people in the place where they plan to carry those intentions out. The Spectre knows many secrets of the universe and its inhabitants, though even he is not omniscient. The Spectre can sometimes get glimpses into the future, although this is not without great difficulty. The only time he was given a long, vivid glimpse into the future was when God granted him one in order to warn the JLA and prevent universal destruction.

The Spectre can be injured or even slain by sufficient magic force, most notably the Spear of Destiny. Also, if the human host dies, the current Spectre will be no more and the human spirit and the Divine Wrath will separate, each going to his respective destination in the realms beyond life.

Hal Jordan is currently a Green Lantern again. Parallax turned out to be a an evil magic centipede that was posessing him, he separated from it AND the Spectre and came back to life. Batman still did not trust him, but they soon settled their differences by punching each other out on separate occasions.

Green Lanterns rings are capable of making uniforms for the wearer.

Kyle is once again "Ion" but not nearly as powerful as he was. This time, he absorbed the power of his dying ex-girlfriend Jade, who is the daughter of the original Green Lantern Alan Scott.
