ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

This is the best free firewall/router software I have seen.

Really, if you are serious about setting up a REAL firewall, put it all on a cheap Pent. II box with two NICs and Smoothwall and all of your troubles will dissapear.

I never mess with those cheapie firewalls that run on windows.

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.
