"consisting of both letters and numbers and often other symbols (as punctuation marks and mathematical symbols) ; also : being a character in an alphanumeric system"
Basically, it just means that you (can) use both letters or numbers. A date, for example, uses both: March 11, 2007. Some 1-800 phone numbers use both if you've seen advertisements. For example, law firms like: 1-800-THE WOLF or 1-800-THE EAGLE (I think?). Anyhow - that should give you the idea.

alphanumerical
is most often used in coding. It consist of letters and numbers.
all agencies and governmental departments use it.
For example :-
jk38274png
jl38274png
jt38274png
or
abc123def456
it can also use symbols and spaces for example the ISBN on a book does this type of coding using spaces. eg:-
0-646-45215-0 that number (in books) would get you the book entitled:
Infinity Exquisite and unique quilts by A. Duncan and K.Goldup-Graham.

Alphanumeric character sets are those having both alphabetic and numeric characters; your keyboard is an excellent example. The primary sets on a computer are ASCII and EBCDIC.

It just means both letters (alpha) and numbers (numerical). In some cases, it means you need a mix of both, but some are not as restrictive and allow either all alpha, all numbers, or a combination. Most sites recommend using both letters and numbers for passwords to make them harder to figure out. Some places even recommend that you don't use real words.
Examples: My1286, 128605KL, hpelss1, A1B2C3456, kviechn6, etc. etc.
