Can someone refer me to a site that explains how the NID box on the outside of my house works? I'm trying to rewire my dsl directly to the nuts side of the box (the part with the nuts and bolts, the telephone company side). Just wondering what each side does, and how it works, thanks!

The NID serves two purposes. It acts as a test point that separates the telephone network from the customer provided equipment and also provides grounding for lightning protection. Your telephone company can install a DSL filter directly in the NID. If you have a home-run wired to your DSL modem, this eliminates the need for separate filters on each instrument in the house. This same effect can be achieved by using a standard filter with some creative wiring but I would suggest trying to get the NID filter first.

Each line has 2 wires, Pick up the phone inside the house, let some speak into it, go outside with an old phone strip the plug that normally goes into the wall, Try each combination of 2 wires until you hear the person talking.
