I have a goldfish which has started eating/killing his tankmates, he has eaten/killed five fish so far, is this normal? I'd been told goldfish were non-agressive....??

Aggression is not natural in goldfish. The only reason that a goldfish would become aggressive like this is because of overcrowding. If you have a goldfish that is the size of a digital camera, this one goldfish alone needs an aquarium of at least 50 gallons all by himself. And then you would need to add at least another 10 gallons and probably 20 gallons for each additional goldfish you have on top of that. It would be my bet that if your goldfish were put in a tank that was large enough to provide a roomy environment for all of them, you would see the aggression dissipate. You haven't said what size tank you have. If you can't afford or don't want to get a tank large enough to house all of your fish together, if your other goldfish are smaller, I would suggest keeping them all together in the tank you have and getting your large goldfish a 50 gallon tank. Depending on how many fish you have and the size of the tank you have now, you may even need to split up the small goldfish into two separate tanks as well.

I had a goldfish that I know killed at least another fish I suspect more though --
the ones before I thought died of 'natural causes' but a few days after i woke up & found my other fish 'black eyed suzie' crushed behind the ceramic ship -dead - I swear he did it as the other goldfish were dead& long gone - now that I think about it it must have been PLUTO all along kiliing the other fish off
Maybe don't get any more fish till your'JAWS' kicks the bucket ???

Good luck from one murderous goldfish owner to the next !

Your goldfish isn't a killer. likely, you have overstocked her tank. Goldfish ought to purely be saved with different comparable sized goldfish with a similar swimming skill (i.e.: do no longer positioned a ranchu with a comet) additionally, a unmarried oranda desires to be in a bare minimum 10 gallon heavily filtered tank. each added goldfish further ought to have one extra 10 gallons of water. this is a very bare minimum; with goldfish extra effective tanks are continuously ultimate. You did no longer say what form of fish you extra. in case you extra goldfish, make easily particular your tank is sufficiently huge. Goldfish turns into aggressive in the direction of different goldfish and tropical fish in too small of a tank. they additionally will become aggressive if the fish is smaller. purely goldfish can face up to the huge quantities of ammonia produced via goldfish. in no way upload tropical fish, they're going to die without being bullied using fact the will heated water and goldfish do no longer. Tropical fish additionally won't tolerate all the waste a goldfish produces. in the adventure that your fish is in a bowl, all the fish will die using fact a bowl isn't appropriate for any fish. be conscious: as long as there have been purely 2 fish in the 30 tank at a time, this is o.k.. this is obtainable your oranda is male and is relatively overly aggressive. whilst including a clean fish, this is sensible to set up decorations in the tank. you additionally can upload new plant life. this might distract the present fish, and confuse any territorial themes.

He may be chasing the females to death wanting to spawn. If he is that much bigger its very likely that is what is going on. Get a utility basket with holes, plastic and float it in the tank. Either separate the male or the female from each other in there. Let him / her out in a few days and see if the behavior continues. If it does confine him / her for a few more days. There are also tank dividers that you can get at the petstore but a basket is cheaper. Remove any dead fish before the others start eating it.

the space that you keep butch in is probably too small for him. Goldfish are very active and need plenty of space to move around. Also there may be a chance that you're not feeding him enough

No not really, Goldfish are thought to be aquatic plant eaters only, but in their natural habitat goldfish will eat small animals if they can. It just a natural instict that is kicking in. I had the same problem with my guppies. I notice that my guppies were giving birth, but the babies were dissappearing. Then I saw the other guppies eating the newborn guppies. It's just a digression back to their natural instinct.

Yep, too many fish i think, my brother gave me a larger goldfish for the same reason! killing his others. i put him in my outdoor pond with other fish and he was fine, BUT, the hunter became the hunted!!!!! he and the other 3 fish were taken by something which i still don't know wat it was; more than likely birds. Butch is probably just a pig who wants all the food to himself, hence his size!
