What's your sign?

The worst thing you could ask God is "Why are we here?" or "What's the meaning of life?" or any of those cliche answers that you always see in movies. That is a question that if God wanted us to know, he would have answered for us a long time ago. Besides, there are so many different religious groups that believe they know mankind's purpose that God would not want to discourage them from their efforts.

If God ever appears to you, you should ask him a more direct question about a specific situation that is going on and how it will be solved. That sort of thing is what God wants us to know the answer to. He wants us to progress on our own by finding the answers to problems and applying them to our own lives.
This is a solution that could be agreed upon by all religions. God wants us, above all, to progress, to become more than what we think we are capable of. Whether that means taking our souls to another spiritual level (Buddhism) or showing our devotion in every sense of our lives (Islam) we must progress towards the power of God.

This is why asking God why we are here is a bad idea. This goes against the idea of human progress. It would show God that we are an impatient people who don't want to progress but want to know the answers immediately.

If God appeared before you telling you to ask him a question, be careful. He might be using you as the test case for all of mankind. It's really easy to fall into the obvious mistake of using a cliche like that. So don't.

I wouldn't waste my time asking a dumb question. I would ask him why he though it was a good idea to allow pain and suffering for thousands of years when the omnipotent one could have stopped that generations ago.
