The humour masks their pain and deflects attention.

These funny people fear that if they are creating laugher and positivty around them, people will see their pain and suffering inside.

They wish to keep up appearances.

I knew a very overweight girl who was the funniest person I knew. When I got to know her better, she was the sadest person I knew. Whenever she'd let her guard down for a second, she'd quickly add a joke to turn the mood around.

My advice if you're dealing with someone like this, is to listen to their sadness, and not tolerate the jokes. Ask them what they really feel, and let them open up to you. The tears should start rolling.

Since laughter is a very effective coping mechanism, doesn't it stand to reason that someone who is an expert in laughter and humor would be among the most troubled on the inside.

I know from the experience of laughing my way....along with my family.....through some pretty rough times. It got us through. Laughter is a powerful medicine.

I think in part because funny people are actually more pessimistic and have lowly self esteem - they use humor as an aid to bring cheer and recognition to themselves and others. Richard Jeni just killed himself, which is unfortunate. Not a fan or anything, but still a bummer.

In order to enjoy and experience sheer job and laughter a person must experience the opposite feelings.
Then that person choose the funniness to be an outlet rather than the saadness

It's easy. Humour is a form of aggression. So, the funny guy, is actually the guy who can always pinpoint something ridiculous a block away, who always wins any word duel, and the guy who hates himself. Just as the bible says "you must love others as you love thyself", the Jokester's creed would be "You must loath others as much as you loath yourself". Though, believe me, they'll... WE'll never hate anyone else as much as we do ourselves.

Because that's their armor. like the must bully ones, but inside they are cowards. That's the best way they find to don't be hurt and to avoid more painfulness.

Because they're sick of being entertainers but are afraid that if they stop, they won't have anything anymore, not even the title of "funny guy."
