Yes, it is Libel.
But the Client she told, would have to be willing to testify before you could make a case.

As aptly stated above, Libel is when someone makes false statements about you in writing, and the writing is read by a third party. Since there was not writing noted in your factual summary, no libel.
Slander is when someone makes false statements about you by use of speech, and communicated to a third party. However, truth is a complete defense to slander.
Since your client was informed by your ex-co-worker of the lies, she commited slander per se, and you can file a Complaint against her in Superior or Municipal Court.
You also may have a suit against the ex-co-worker concerning business torts. Contact a local attorney for more information.
Good Luck!

Without knowing the facts of the case and the jurisdiction you're in, then I cannot provide you with accurate advice. Contact a barrister or solicitor in your area if you are considering taking legal actions.
Generally speaking, slander, is a defamatory comment which is made which affects the reputation of the good character of the victim/plaintiff. As such, if this women made this comment, knowing it to be untrue, and it has affected your good character you may be able to sue for slander.
You need to take into account that defamation cases are often very hard to prove - particularly slander, as there is not neccessarily any physical evidence of the defamation. It often becomes a case of he says, she says...
The compensation is also often quite small, as generally a public retraction of the comment and a small amount of compensation will suffice.
You need to weigh up the possible benefits, with the consequences. There could be hefty legal fees if you lose the case, the sum of money, if you win, may be so small that it doesn't even cover the time and effort you spent on the case. Perhaps you could confront the women, say that you are considering legal action unless she offers a retraction?
Please do not rely on any advice provided on the internet - you do not know the reliability of the source. If you are intent on suing, contact a legal practioner in your area.

Proof in is who you are. nothing else. the alleged matter is your word against hers and can only be heard by a judge/jury. Get a local Lawyer Libel/slander is difficult to prove. What you've said is neither.

Slander is when someone makes false statements about you by use of speech.
What she did to you is slander, not libel.
You don;t have to be an attorney to know this. ha-ha:-)

You cannot solicit legal information from anonymous Internet sources.. It is both dangerous and unwise in your situation. The solicited info may not be true in the state that you reside in...

If you need to act quickly, and want specific legal advice, then you need to contact an attorney licensed in your state.
An out-of-state attorney cannot give you legal advice, and if you really care about your legal rights, you should not base your decision on anonymous comments posted on the internet.
